The men’s boxers are here, in the newest addition to Alas’ fabric offering: handwoven organic chambray. They feature a button fly opening and a comfortable elastic waist.
Not only is the chambray made from 100% GOTS organic cotton yarn, it was also dyed by hand and handloom woven by a traditional weaving workshop in Kerala, India. This intricate process results in a smooth fabric, but with the richness and texture of hand-finishing… it’s really good.
The fabric is extremely soft and breathable, but also durable. The garments were sewn in a Fairtrade certified workshop, so you can rest easy that everyone involved in their production was treated with the respect they deserve.
Founded in 2011 by Kelly Elkin and Betony Dircks, ALAS is a Sydney-based, organic sleep and loungewear label with a focus on enigmatic prints and relaxed silhouettes.
ALAS is an acronym for ‘All Light, All Shadow’ which represents the nature of change; day to night, sleeping to waking. The acronym also alludes to the idea of transparency in the supply chain, as they wish to shine light on their manufacturing practices and organically grown cotton.
“ALAS has endeavoured to create a brand that is socially and ecologically responsible. They are constantly searching for ways to lessen their impact on the environment through their processes”
ALAS’ sleepwear is made in India where the cotton is also grown, spun, woven and dyed. All of the garments are constructed with GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certified organic cotton, in fair labour, sweatshop-free factories. They visit their producers regularly to maintain strong relationships and trust between all parties. Staff enjoy full medical care, use of AZO and formaldehyde free/low impact dyestuff for solid dyeing and printing, a generous living wage and access to loans and support.
