Eight years ago a group of friends witnessed the heart-breaking reality of women trapped in sexual exploitation. Compelled by a deep desire to love and serve these women, they decided to do something about it and Starfish Project was born. Five brave women were the first to trust the Project’s founders and take the step out of exploitation to begin a new life.
Three branches have since developed in Asia, with the jewelry business providing women with meaningful employment in a safe and supportive environment. Women who come to Starfish Project have been physically, emotionally, and sexually abused and see no way out of their situation.
“One by one, exploited women empower themselves and recognize their value”
As they work in the company, women also receive housing, counselling, education, vocational training and health care. They begin to see themselves as worthwhile, capable, and loved and can pursue a brighter future for themselves and their families.
At Starfish Project, women begin by making jewelry and over time grow to take on greater roles in the organization’s leadership and in the realization of its vision. One by one, exploited women empower themselves and recognize their value through receiving social, emotional and practical opportunities.
